We, Canada, has one of the worst record when it come to Indigenous rights. We have a little old granny siting outside ottawa protesting how her band been treated. reserves in the north have be compare with 3rd world country. In BC are gov want them, to let them put in pipeline for the oil on there land. I very sick of the ad's and the promised that come with it.

At the same time not all reserves or Native have it bad and bring in there own money. There money come from us. They employ on the reserves getting pay with fed dollar. They don't pay tax on there pay cheeks. If they go to a gas stations that is on and run by the reserves( aki the feds) not only do they get the tax off there gas, they can also get 50% off there plus the tax but for this to happen they must have a card and be from a band that the fed gov said is a native band. So if your Inuit or Métis you won't get this. ( I not sure if this is the same is other prov. I can only say this for sure at least one because I work for them for about 2 years.)

Anonymous   Your first hand account of working at a gas station and not charging the gas taxes is incomplete. Wages on reserve for registered indians are LOWER than elsewhere because of the non-taxation, thats right indigenous people working on reserve het paid less because they arent required to pay taxes. Oh and go to Stats Canada and look at the average income for First nations wirking on reserve, you will find that they'd be in the lowest tax bracket anyway & so wouldnt pay taxes even if they were working at a gas station off reserve cause you dont make enough money to meet the LIC (low income cutoff) so they'd get a tax return even if they did pay taxes. See below...Our economy is resource based, resources which come from the LAND, land that was gained through treaties. I guess if we are going to reneg on our treaties we should likely start with the really big & expensive ones...you know like our treaties with the EU or the USA or perhaps Mexico. Yup, governments only make treaties with other governments and they are two way agreements, so if you'd really like to rip up the treaty that agrees to share the land with you in exchange for a few minor concessions then I guess we all better get ready to move! We are all treaty people in Canada. I get to own land & profit from its resources, First Nations were supposed to get health care, education & a treaty payment of $5.00 per year, the RCMP still show up on reserves to make the treaty payments of ...you guessed it $5 per registered person per year, too bad we don't uphold the rest of the treaty obligations but hey at least they get their 5 bucks. Don't believe me? Look it up! My fellow Canadians we are sadly misinformed by CBC, CTV, GLOBAL and the rest- corporate media is lying!

hope   I can say that I never did asked, and I was never told what or if there was a different. My main point that I think I did lost with my post, was that are gov decide what band can get these beneficent I had to tell native that the gov didn't see the as native. It was one have the most unfair thing I ever had to do and it would always end up having to get someone, because the person would not believe me.

I am all for giving "Native" Canadians reparations for the land that has been taken from them. I also believe that between tax savings, government funding, settlements, and all the other forms of reparation the Canadian government has made over the last 100 years or more, more than compensates for what has been taken. Every "Native" Canadian alive was not around when the lands got taken. If you were alive, then you have been compensated as the government has been very careful to negotiate with the indienous peoples or else they'd have a riot (which seems to happen every 10 years or so anyways). Every "native" Canadian alive today, and everyone that will be born into this world will reep those benefits as well.

I put native into quotes because, what is a native? A person born in a specified place or associated with a place by birth, whether subsequently resident there or not. Guess what, that is every man, woman, child, black, white, oriental cultured, pakistani cultured, (the list goes on and on), that has been born in Canada. The rest of us don't get savings. We don't get a tax cut just because our provincial goverment decided that hey, we want to expand into some farmers field. They pay him out (just like they did to the original natives), and they move on. That farmer does not receive any tax breaks.

If the "natives" are feeling ripped off because they are government funded and need more money, well maybe they should do what the rest of the country does because they aren't government funded... they put on a suit and tie, and hit the pavement and work.

I hope the Canadian government can one day have the balls stand up and say "We have paid you in full, our debt is complete".

Anonymous   I forgot to mention, the "government" doesn't pay the "native" Canadians, every Canadian who pays taxes, has to pay the "natives" so that they don't have to pay taxes. How backwards is that?

Anonymous 2012-12-26 02:00:54
Actually, the only first nations people who do not pay taxes are those who meet all three of the following criteria:
1. A registered Indian
2. Live on reserve
3. Work on reserve
If you live on reserve and work elsewhere, you pay taxes - period
If you live elsewhere and work on reserve, you pay taxes - period
If you lost your registration through enfranchisement, you pay taxes - period
Taxes that all Canadians pay, purchase roads, fund health care and education, pay for street lights and oh so many other amenities we take for granted. I suggest you go to a reserve and experience what it is to have no hospital, no paved roads, no street lights, piss poor education & slip shod housing built by government contractors because hey if you read the Indian Act you will find that private enterprise ISN'T ALLOWED to build on reserves. The Indian Agent (INAC) decides who builds, what businesses may operate AND what services will be provided & by whom. I pay taxes and I know that for every $10 000 in taxes I pay less than 25 cents goes to fund any first nation costs. Our government sends more of my tax money overseas or to your nice suburban community than it does to reserve communities. Who paid for your community roads? Subsidized housing in your Canadian town? The hospital you last visited? We did, Canadian taxpayers.

Anonymous   The natives are not just angry about land. Unless you know a Native or are a Native. Try not to speak against Native issues.

Anonymous   My cousin is married to a "native", so I'm well familiar with their issues. You guys need to stop feeling entitled and move on like the rest of Canada has. Like I said before, go out and get a job and start providing for yourselves and stop relying on government assistance.

Um, I have a job, I make six figures. I paid for my education & so did every one of my relations. We have jobs, we pay taxes. We care about the land it's true, as in NO we don't want it polluted, NO we don't want it destroyed. Reserve land is less than 1% of the total geography of Canada, yet guess where toxic waste dumps are located? Bill C45 is not a budget bill, it removes protection from Canada's water ways so that the water can be diverted for industry. It enables the government of Canada to re-zone YOUR land, Crown land, public land for industrial usage. Crown land is unspoiled natural land across Canada upon which many first nations still hunt & gather for food, where perhaps you camp, or maybe even hunt or ride your quads and snowmobiles. Crown land is a Canadian resource that until now the government had to consult the public before allowing resource extraction. It's fortunate that our First Nations were first to read & recognize the problems with c45, now we as Canadians have the opportunity to recognize the dire consequences of this bill before its too late. I suggest you search First Nations Hot Spots Harper, you'll find that your belief that First Nations people are just out for a money or land grab is based on a carefully orchestrated propaganda campaign to undermine opposition.
If our government is successful in reframing the debate from Bill C45 to First Nations trouble makers we are all in trouble. Do your research!

Anonymous   What happened to PM Stephen Harper"s Twitter account? This afternoon he began tweeting about Homer Simpson and Bacon...all the while Chief Theresa Spence was in her 11th day of a hunger strike as she waits for a meeting with Harper and the Govenor General.

Anonymous   That's by her own choice, Harper is not making her starve herself.

Anonymous   No he is the impetus. He only meets with the leadership from whom he is assured agreement. His government accused Spence and the Attiwapiskat leaders of mis-spending reserve funds. They went to court and the allegations ofvHarper's media machine were proven false, but of course by then the media spotlight had shifted to yet another flavor of the day news story or fluff piece. Chief Spence is on hunger strike to gain an audience with our Prime Minister, the people's representative, Canadians leader, as a Canadian I believe that my leader should meet with community leadership when there is a crisis. Children starving, children dying, homeless children - in one of the richest nations on the planet - would seem a crisis to me.

Anonymous   I feel for you in canada parts of the u.s. are dealing with the same issue. What most people don't realize is that we didn't take land away from the natives the french came over and did that. We just bought that land from france and now have to suffer the consequences because of what they did, thanks a lot france.

That's right, government dollars spent on watching those pesky indigenous people so that when they start making noise with movements like Idle No More the government can undermine their efforts with propaganda.

I was looking for a web site that I found a few month ago warning Canadian about traveling to center and south america and now I can't fine them. Lonely planet also said page not found.

It was about Canadian companies and how they force out Indigenous people off there land for their natural resource. The warning was to say your not from Canada and about backpacker removing the flag from their backpack.

This is how the big shot and are gov. treat other Indigenous people in other country for their resource. Who to say they won't use force in there own country.

This is about building oil pipelines through native territory without their permission, its about giving them basic social rights like access to clean water, its about basic access to health care and schools etc. A people who have been destroyed by colonialist forces for three centuries. Language destroyed, culture destroyed people destroyed

Anonymous   Chief Spence's hunger strike is about those things. Idle No More is about Bill C45 which every Canadian should read, and from the tenor of these posts I respectfully suggest a quick read of the Indian Act and a First Nations/Crown treaty or two. The treaty of Versailles might help to elucidate what a treaty is and who makes them.

Anonymous   Support Chief Spence, she is going to die for her cause. Her efforts cannot be in vain, today is day 15 of her hunger strike on parliament hill & still no meeting with Harper, he's too busy enjoying the season playing cards with grannies at seniors lodges (where the wealthy of Canada get the 24 hour care) to meet with a starving grandma outside on his doorstep in the cold Canadian winter. Idle No More Canada!
50082
Anonymous   Idle No More events are taking place across Canada, get out and support them! Bring INAC to its knees they are the keystone to Harpers vile plans for industry expansion and environmental destruction. Our First Nation's brothers, sisters, grannies and grandpas have begun this fight on behalf of all Canadians. Three grandfathers were arrested right before Christmas for daing to walk up the road where they live, why? Because the corporation logging the area had decreed it a no trespass zone for 500m from their gate. Where is the right to protest in Canada? It's gone unless you are in a large group, make the Idle No More protest groups stronger by joining them, they cannot arrest us all!

Anonymous   We are all treaty people, Harper hasn't figured out two things: first that there are 3 founding nations in Canada even our constitution says so - the First Nations, the English, the French. Second, that the treaty's are our founding documents, they make the constitution possible because it is through treaty's that Canada has a land mass. Yes, treaty's are about money & land but so far they've been one sided. Settlers have always gained land through treaty's there is not a single treaty that GAVE first nations more land than they started with. On to the money, at no time has Canada through its government paid fair market value for First Nations land, in actual fact the government gives a pittance and takes the land. C45 enables them to do this faster, easier & for even less monetary cost.

Stephen Harper has shown his ignorance to all Canadians.

He is the epitome of "corrupt politician".

The interests of the citizens of Canada are not reflected in his government's actions. He stands for the 1%.

He has divided the people of Canada against each other about various subjects, and the majority have become shortsighted as a result, and fail to see the truth that their very livelihood is at stake.

Reforms have been established that will ultimately destroy many individuals and families as they are thrown deeper into poverty. Many people will lose their retirement savings, houses, cars. Be forced into resorting to welfare. All for the sake of what the Harper government calls "connecting people with jobs".

This government has failed to acknowledge flaws in education and job training systems before reforming things such as the employment insurance system. They have also failed to acknowledge that most unemployed or seasonal workers have no financial means to move to where the jobs are at in Canada.

Bills have been passed that will ultimately lead to the destruction of waterways and forests, which will lead to contamination of sources of freshwater and destruction of habitats and wildlife.

They have used illegal robocalls as a means to attempt to suppress voters.

They have raised the retirement age without considering the health of the elderly.

They have allowed the identities and personal information of over 500,000 people to be stolen, making them susceptible to the problems caused by identity theft.

They have lied to taxpayers about the true costs of the F-35 fighter jets.

They have allowed companies to hire only foreign workers and refuse Canadian applicants while they continue to demonise the unemployed.

They have shown ignorance toward First Nations people, as Idle No More clearly has brought to our attention through their protests.

They have done and are planning to do many more things that hurt Canada, and it's at a lever never before seen in Canada.

Governments such as the Harper government exist throughout the entire world. They're all geared toward the interests of the 1%, and it's time to end this....Starting with the Harper government.

The world needs to stand together and force governments to work in the favor of the 99%. By working to end the problems caused by the Harper government, we will send a clear message to governments everywhere : we will NOT accept being treated as sheep anymore, and they will NOT work against us anymore, and the 1% matters LEAST!

Harper will be first to feel the pressure of the people, and the one who succeeds him will know better thanto work against the people.
